A
more civilized type of soccer started to spread in the public schools,
with early coaches
adding rules, referees and positions on the field. In the 19th century
it was decided that soccer tournaments would be more organized. In 1862,
a solicitor in England named Cobb Morley suggested that there be more
rules for semi-professional soccer clubs. Several soccer organizations
formed the “Football Association,” the first governing body
for soccer teams.
As the game of soccer grew in popularity, so did the
need for an international soccer organization. FIFA (Federation of
International Football Associations) was formed in Paris in 1904.
From humble beginnings to the largest international
sporting event on earth, the World Cup has a long, rich history, dating
back to 1926. The host of the first World Cup was Uruguay. Uruguay
was chosen because of their amazing performance at the 1924 Summer
Olympics in Paris, where they won gold in the football competition.
This year, the World Cup will be hosted by South Africa.
The vibrant colors, splendor and rich culture of Africa are sure to
entertain the billions of 2010 World Cup viewers as much as the competition
itself.
